What Is Panchkarma? The Science of Ayurvedic Bio-Purification
Panchkarma — from the Sanskrit Pancha (five) + Karma (actions or procedures) — is the classical Ayurvedic system of five bio-purification therapies described in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. It is the most comprehensive system of internal body purification designed to systematically eliminate accumulated Ama (metabolic toxins) from the deepest tissue levels and restore complete doshic balance.
Unlike symptomatic treatments — which manage disease without removing its root cause — Panchkarma works at the level of the Dhatus (body tissues) and Srotas (body channels) to eliminate the underlying doshic imbalances that produce disease. This is why Panchkarma produces lasting results for chronic conditions that have not responded to conventional treatment.
