This is the question we hear most often — and patients are almost always surprised by the answer. The leech's bite is extremely small, and its saliva contains natural analgesic (pain-reducing) compounds that numb the area almost immediately. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild tingling or slight drawing feeling. Many patients relax during the session and find it more comfortable than they anticipated.

The area may feel slightly sore or itchy for 24–48 hours after the session, which is normal and subsides quickly with the aftercare measures provided by Dr Solanki.

At Ayutirth Ayurveda, patient safety is paramount. We use only laboratory-certified medicinal leeches that are raised in controlled environments specifically for therapeutic use. Every leech is used only once per patient and is then safely discarded — it is never reused on another patient. This single-use protocol eliminates the risk of cross-infection. The application site is thoroughly cleaned before and after the procedure, and turmeric's natural antiseptic properties are used for aftercare.

The number of sessions depends on your specific condition and its severity. As a general guide: mild acne or early-stage pigmentation may respond in 2–3 sessions; moderate psoriasis or eczema typically requires 4–6 sessions; alopecia areata and chronic skin conditions may require 6–10 sessions spaced 2–4 weeks apart. Dr Solanki evaluates your progress at each visit and adjusts the treatment plan accordingly.

Yes — and this is one of the most encouraging applications of Jalaukavacharana. Hair follicles are sensitive to microcirculation; even minor impairment of blood flow in the scalp can cause follicle miniaturisation and hair loss. Leech therapy improves local blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to dormant follicles and removing the inflammatory toxins that suppress follicle activity. Patients with alopecia areata and diffuse hair thinning caused by scalp inflammation have shown particularly good response. For best results, Leech Therapy is combined with Ayurvedic hair loss treatment including Nasya therapy and Ayurvedic hair oils.

Chronic recurrence is common with conditions like psoriasis and eczema when treated with conventional medicines alone, because topical steroids and antihistamines suppress surface symptoms without addressing the underlying Pitta-Rakta imbalance. Leech Therapy, combined with oral Ayurvedic blood-purifying medicines and dietary correction, addresses this root cause directly. Many patients achieve remission periods of 12–24 months or longer after a complete course.

Yes — and this is our standard approach at Ayutirth Ayurveda. Leech Therapy works best as part of a comprehensive Ayurvedic treatment plan. For skin conditions, it is typically combined with Virechana (therapeutic purgation), oral blood-purifying Ayurvedic medicines and a Pitta-pacifying diet. For hair loss, it is combined with Nasya therapy, Shirodhara and medicated hair oil applications. For inflammatory joint conditions with associated skin disorders, it may be combined with Agnikarma therapy. Dr Solanki designs the complete treatment protocol during your initial consultation.

Leech Therapy is generally safe across a wide age range. Sushruta Samhita recommends it as the blood purification method of choice for women, children and elderly patients who cannot tolerate stronger bloodletting procedures, because it is gentle, localised and controllable. However, it is contraindicated in patients with bleeding disorders, those on anticoagulant medications, and patients with severely compromised immunity.
